St. Luke's Episcopal Church of Phillipsburg, New Jersey

Memorial Gift Fund

Memorials are given to the glory of God in memory of a loved one and to memorialize the deceased.

Memorials are gifts to the church that are given in addition to the regular pledge.  A pledge is essential for the church to meet its yearly budget.  A gift is given for a specific purpose and cannot be used for any other purpose.

Gifts can be in memory of a loved one who has died or in honor of one who is still living.  A gift may be in the form of money or a specific item.  All memorials given to St. Luke's shall become the property of St. Luke's.

The Memorial Committee of the Vestry can assist families in choosing items that best support priority church ministry projects.

The Memorial Committee establishes a list of items needed by the congregation that memorials can be given to support, as well as standing funds for designated projects or ministries.

Whenever possible, the funds are disbursed in accordance with the wishes of the deceased person or the immediate family.  If a specific purpose has been defined, the contributions are classified as "restricted/designated funds" and are not dispersed without the approval of the family.  If the family indicates that the funds may be dispersed at the discretion of the committee, the funds are defined as "unrestricted funds."

Unrestricted Funds

  • Tangible Items
  • Special Programs (e.g., ministering to people in our church or in our community) or missions of the church (e.g., retreats).

Restricted Funds

  • Memorial Commitee's list of suggested items:

ü Seasonal Banners

ü Chasubles

ü Alter & Lector Hangings

ü Carpet for Christian Education Building

  • Items or special programs specified by donor or deceased.

Designated Funds

  • Building Fund
  • Altar Guild
  • Episcopal Church Women’s Group (ECW)
  • Luke's Pantry (Community Outreach)
  • Epiphany Fund
  • Discretionary Fund

It should be understood by the giver of any memorial gift that nothing except God’s love and grace is absolutely permanent.  Therefore, while most memorials will remain in place for many years, there will come a time when they have served their purpose.  At such time, the function or location of the memorial may be changed or discontinued.

A record of money or items given in memory of a specific person shall be kept by the parish secretary in a memorial book.
